He felt a sharp pain like she had thrust a knife into him and he cried out wildly falling to the floor.

  Aida quickened her pace down the corridor distressed by his outcry but not enough to go back to him. With a heavy heart, she set off for Brussels the next morning.

  Hadley awoke that next morning on the floor where he had fallen to the sound of the telephone chiming on his desk. He pulled himself up with a groan and held his back as he went to answer it.

  'Yes?' He said groggily.

  'Sir, there’s an urgent matter come up at the station.' Scallop’s voice came down the line.

  'I’ll be right there.'
